Shelter is a non-profit organization with a heart for seeing families in need in Honduras go from surviving to thriving. By helping meet their basic needs of housing, food, and education supplies, resources are freed up for individuals to focus on building a stronger future for themselves and generations to come.

In rural areas, one out of five Hondurans lives in extreme poverty.
Roughly 60% of the Honduran population lives in poverty, with nearly 38% to 40% experiencing extreme poverty. In rural areas, one out of five Hondurans lives in extreme poverty. What this often looks like is large families sharing a lean-to structure constructed with found materials like sticks, plastic, or scrap metal. These structures provide little protection from the elements, often have dirt floors, and lack electricity, running water, plumbing, and in many cases beds to sleep on. Living in structures like this exposes residents to infectious diseases, respiratory illnesses, chronic stress, and chronic illnesses.
Shelter is uniquely positioned to address this problem
Our team is made up of members who have either lived in or been working in Honduras for decades. We have formed vital relationships with community members and partnerships with local workers and venders. This helps us assess needs in the community quikly and build homes in one day or even multiple homes a day.
Impact future generations
Roughly 30% of children in Honduras do not attend school. When a family is in financial crisis, it is more likely that they will put pressure on young children to leave school and begin working to help the family. Without even a basic education, a child has little hope of breaking the cycle of poverty within their family.
End the cycle of poverty
When basic needs are met, we know that families are able to shift their focus to education, better nutrition, and more long-term planning. This puts them in a position to build towards a future free from extreme poverty.
