Where you live shouldn't determine whether you live or die.
Though Shelter is new, members of our team has been traveling to Honduras for decades and have witnessed first-hand the desperation many families live in. We have also seen the generational transformation that can occur when the cycle of poverty begins to break. By providing stable housing, we can empower families as they build a brighter future.
A story of hope and desperation
The trip to get to this family had the team crossing rivers and climbing higher and higher up remote mountains where an indigenous tribe of people, the Tolupán, live.
There are a couple of things we cannot convey to you: how remote we were, the difficulty of the climb, how beautiful it was, how unbelievable the need was, and the magnitude of impact a gift of a house was to this family.
When our team reached the top and saw where the family had been living, they were stunned, and tears were hard to hold back.
A family of five, Angela, Anivel, and their three sons, were “living” in a lean-to, 8x8, maybe, thatched roof with sticks and some plastic. Not a bit of food or water anywhere. Looking inside the structure, it was clear that this was as bad as it gets.
The family watched on and helped where they could as the new house was built, smiling the entire time. One of the things we do on these builds is bring a bed with each home. The thought of the family laying their heads on a clean, dry bed after the desperate conditions they had been living in was enough to overwhelm.
As the team was finishing the house, the husband/father shared that “this morning, we had nothing; we had no food, no house, and today God saw us. Now we have a home and food. God saw us today.”
Those words,“God saw us today,” are embedded in our hearts. We all want to be seen, to know we matter, and we all deserve compassion and dignity.
Where you were born should not determine whether you live or die.
When their basic need for housing is met, this frees up funds and resources, allowing families to move forward and focus on education, healthcare, nutrition, and water, helping them create a future free from extreme poverty.
Goals for 2024
Will you donate to help us accomplish this life-changing work?
Empowering others to break the cycle of poverty
Housing instability has been shown to negatively impact children’s health, development, and school performance.Addressing the basic need for housing frees up the family to focus on nutrition, education, and creating more stability for their future.
Food Security
Food insecurity affects concentration, memory, mood, and motor skills. And malnutrition in children impairs brain development and greatly decreases the child’s chances of success in school. We can help empower kids to learn by providing families with food relief.
Education
Many rural children in Honduras do not attend school simply because they cannot afford the required school supplies. Pencils, notebooks, and uniforms prove to be a huge barrier to entry into education. We can help build a brighter future for Honduran children by properly equipping them for school. We plan to supply 1,000 children with school supplies in 2024.
Housing
Housing insecurity impacts every aspect of a family’s life and creates ripple effects felt in future generations. When a family is in financial crisis, it is more likely that they will put pressure on young children to leave school and begin working to help the family. Around10% of all children between the ages of 5 and 14 are involved in child labor activities. Most of these children do not attend school and consequently do not receive basic education.
Introduce your team
A common concern a visitor experiences is how well will the product or service be supported. Introducing the team eases fears while showing confidence.
